After four years of marriage, Joshua Jackson and Jodie Turner-Smith are calling it quits.

On Oct. 2, PEOPLE confirmed the Queen & Slim actress, 37, filed for divorce from Jackson, 45. The two share one child, a 3-year-old daughter.

Before the split, the stars often gushed about their relationship. From the moment they first met to Turner-Smith's decision to pop the question herself, the actress once said she felt the two were " like mirrors for each other."

When He Knew

In the summer of 2023, Jackson shared that he fell for his wife of four years the moment he saw her. 

During a segment of Watch What Happens Live called “Pillow Talk,” host Andy Cohen asked Jackson when he first knew that Turner-Smith was “the one.”

"When she walked into the room looking like that," he replied.

When She Knew

Turner-Smith had previously shared her account of that night, telling Seth Meyers on an episode of Late Night that she saw him first.

"First of all, I saw him before he saw me and when I saw him, I was like, 'I want that,' " she said. "And then when he saw me, I just pretended like I didn't see him."

Elsewhere in the interview she revealed that they initially “had a one-night stand” and joked, "We're in a two-, three-year one-night stand now."

'Mirrors for Each Other'

In 2021, Turner-Smith shared that the pair were sure to remind themselves often of how lucky they felt to be in the other’s lives.

"I think it's really beautiful to be with someone who is so supportive and so loving," Turner-Smith told PEOPLE. "We're so similar in so many ways. We're like mirrors for each other. And I just really love that human being."

"We high five each other all the time about how great we chose," she added with a laugh. "We're like, 'You did a great job choosing,' and then we're like, 'Yeah, you too.' "

Industry Insiders

As her own career took off, the British actress expressed her gratitude for Jackson’s expertise while speaking with PEOPLE in April 2021.

"He has a wealth of experience to offer and advice to offer that's based on experience," she said. "And I love that. I just love picking his brain about things. I'm somebody who's just beginning. So that energy of someone who's just beginning, that excitement, that just everything and anything is possible, I think that I really inspire him with that."

Looking Back

During an appearance on The Tonight Show in 2021, Jackson revealed that Turner-Smith was the one to pop the question while they were on vacation together.

"We were in Nicaragua. It was very beautiful, incredibly romantic. We were walking down the beach, and she asked me to marry her,” the Dr. Death star told Jimmy Fallon.

'Amazing Collaboration'

“We have probably the most amazing collaboration you could ever possibly hope for in your life, which is being husband and wife and parents,” Jackson said in September 2022, when the couple spoke to PEOPLE about their dynamic as partners.

Turner-Smith raved about her husband with a Valentine’s Day Instagram tribute just a few months after PEOPLE confirmed the couple had tied the knot. The post also came on the heels of their pregnancy announcement in January 2020.

“Our 2nd valentine's day and it's even more magical than the first!” the Sex Education star captioned the ode to Jackson, which featured a clip of him rubbing her baby bump. “Here's to a lifetime of them. happy valentine's day to the man who sees my soul and holds my heart 💞 love you, baby daddy 💋🤗🥰.”

'The Happiest Whirlwind'

On Turner-Smith's birthday in 2020, Jackson penned an ode to his "beautiful wife."

"Thank you for choosing to share your light with me. Thank you for walking this path of life as my wife. Thank you for bringing our daughter into the world. This last year has been the happiest whirlwind of my life. I can’t wait to see what all the years to come bring our way. Love, Josh"

His Mother's Day post that year was equally loving, thanking Turner-Smith for "being the light that you are. I love seeing you enter the pantheon of mothers. And I look forward to walking this path by your side as we nurture this little engine of joy you have blessed the world with."

In her very first Instagram post featuring Jackson in 2019, Turner-Smith wrote, "two people who only fancy each other a little bit 🥰"

Support System

In a joint 2022 chat with Forbes, Turner-Smith said, "When I met Josh and one of the biggest reasons why I married him, wanted him to be my husband, is because of how loved and supported I felt by him. I had never been with anyone who I thought was wanting to lift me up the way that I felt that he was lifting me up. That is one of my favorite things about him."

'So Lucky'

In a September 2020 interview with NET-A-PORTER Turner-Smith said "I'm really in love with my husband. That might be weird for people, but I'm doing a pretty good job of not shouting that from the rooftops as much as I would like to."
