Swifties, are you guys okay?

At midnight (naturally), Taylor Swift dropped her 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, a rage- and sorrow-filled missive detailing her feelings about not one but two of her recent breakups. In the songs Swift aims her deadliest weapons (allegedly) at Matty Healy, whom she infamously dated for a few drama-filled months last year. It turns out that there may have been way, way more going on behind the scenes (ghosting! tears! Charlie Puth conversations!) than we knew.

To mark this momentous occasion, Glamour staff, which is composed of die-hard Swifties, casual fans, and even some skeptics, gathered to listen to the album for the first time and chat about it. Here are our thoughts, completely unfiltered, about every single song.

“He loves a boom clap.” —AM

“I like this way more than Midnights so far.” —CW

Track 7: “Fresh Out the Slammer”

“I think this one is maybe about the Joe-to-Matty transition.” —AM

“I feel like it's kind of rude to compare Joe to a jail; he’s just private, damn.” —SM

“It's one thing to be private, another thing to literally not want her to do her thing.” —ET

“I know, he didn’t let her bejeweled.” —SM

“Bejailed.” —DS

Track 8: “Florida!!!” (featuring Florence & the Machine)

“‘My friends all smell like weed or little babies’—okay brag.” —AM

“‘I'm always drunk on my own tears, isn't that what they all say?’ I love this woman. This feels more targeted at her haters to me.” —ET

“This is one of my favorite songs on the album so far. It packs a punch. Some epic imagery in this: teeth, circus, snarling, the big bad wolf.” —SB

“Jokes aside, I really don't think it's about hating her fans. even the one song that directly calls them (us) out is so obviously included because she was literally wrong and ended up with someone better.” —ET

“This could be the new situationship anthem, the track for all your bad decisions!” —SB

“What if the bonus songs are about TRAV.” —CW

“Will the Trav songs just sound like LMFAO instrumentals?” —DS

Track 12: “Loml”

“This is a great lore song. You're the loss of my life! She really felt for this man, damn!” —ET

“This has to be a quill song, right?” —AM

“This sounds like…folkmore?” —DS

“This is one of the sadder songs so far. A melancholy Taylor with the line she teased us with, ‘I wish I could un-recall how we almost had it all.’ Changes ‘love of my life’ to ‘loss of my life’ in that final line!” —SB

“That was Joe tho, right?” —CW

“Def Matty to me.” —ET

“I think FolkloreEvermore/Midnights were more Joe albums than people realized and now he's done and dusted and this is about the Matty chapter.” —AM

“‘I'm so depressed I act like it's my birthday!’” —ET

“‘I cry a lot but I'm so productive it's an art,’ really speaks to my Capricorn sun, Cancer moon.” —AM

“Yeah, this is the song.” —DS

“I’m miserable and no one knows…drag me.” —SM

“Crying in the club is my favorite genre.” —AM

“This is the sing-along (shout-along) song of the album by far. Will be a big concert hit for sure.” —SB

Track 14: “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”

“This sounds like it got left on the Evermore cutting floor.” —AM

“This is a master class in taking down a situationship in song. It is brutal and brilliant. Imagine being the person she wrote this about? ‘The slide into inboxes’ is going to speak to so many!” —SB

“Daaaaaaaang Matty ghosted her.” —CW

“He looks like a ghost.” —SR

“He looks like a ghost and a ghoster.” —DS

“Sooo basically she was willing to deal with the backlash but he dipped out…to quote Sandoval.” —AM

“Is this....Sandoval’s anthem? Taylor is Sandoval and Raquel is Matty?” —SM

“Wait..wait…if the emotions I'm getting from this are right…what if she and British boy 1 (Joe) didn’t have such a bad breakup and it just fizzled. What if Matty ACTUALLY broke her heart and her over-the-top PR stuff with Travis is sort of to get back at HIM?” —DS

“I mean he kinda is the smallest man who ever lived.” —AM

“As The New Yorker said: It has been alleged online that Healy is actually, secretly, five feet five inches tall.” —CW

“DO NOT FORGET that Matty Healy also inspired that rat in that film.” —DS

Track 15: “The Alchemy”

“Heroin but this time with an e, lol. Feminism!” —DS

Track 16: “Clara Bow”

“Taylor’s Grammy look all coming together with this Clara Bow song. I love that Clara was a scandalous silent movie star, people have described her as the OG ‘It girl.’” —SB

“A 1975 reference?” —CW

[Editor’s note: And then we went to bed. But of course, Taylor wasn’t done, dropping ANOTHER album at 2:00 a.m. So we gathered the Glamour Tortured Poets Department Group Chat Department again to discuss The Anthology.]

Track 1: “The Black Dog”

“Welcome back, everyone.” —SM

“I was listening to the new tracks this morning and my husband said, ‘Anna, I don't think I can do it. It's too much Taylor.’ And as soon as I turned it off, my babies started crying. So I have officially indoctrinated them as Swifties.” —AM

“I'm going to be quiet about ‘Black Dog’ because my thoughts will be too unhinged.” —ET

Track 2: “imgonnagetyouback”

“Phil Collins Tarzan soundtrack drums. The Tarzan soundtrack was amazing, it's not an insult!” —DS

“I loved those drums. It made my brain buzz.” —ET

“Who doesn't love the Tarzan soundtrack!?” —ET

“I like this, but...Olivia Rodrigo did the superior ‘I'm gonna get him back’ song.” —AM

“Name it something else, Taylor!” —ET

“Maybe it's a ‘Happiness’ situation, but I still wanna know what the deal was with the great unfollowing.” —ET

Track 3: “The Albatross”

“Oooooh, this is sooo Folklore…‘Cardigan’ vibes.” —CW

“A.k.a. her Grammys outfit.” —DS

“Yeah, this is an early favorite.” —AM

“These are such Taylor lyrics. I could sing the chorus along with her before ever hearing it.” —ET

“‘I tried to warn you about them.’ WHO? Her fans? The media?” —DS

Track 4: “Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus”

“THIS IS THE ONE. THIS IS MY CURRENT FAVE.” —ET

“Is this a song about me?” —SR

“Olivia Rodrigo, is that you?” —DS

“At this point, I'm reading through these lyrics searching for ‘Chantal’ like I did with key chains at gift store shops during vacations as a kid.” —CW

“Which one is Blake's daughter's name?!” —ET

“This is for sure Matty. But it's also just all my ex-boyfriends.” —ET

“Apparently ‘The Alchemy’ is about Trav? This one's talking about drugs which makes me think we're back to Matty?” —CW

“YOU HAVE SOME KIDS W SOME INTERNET STAR??? That better not be about Gabriette.” —DS

“Much like the Folklore/Evermore era, I'd prefer to be listening to this by candlelight.” —AM

Track 5: “How Did It End?”

“It's pretty and I know I'm going to be obsessed with it next week, but it's currently meshing into everything else for me.” —ET

“This one gets a bit lost; not the strongest.” —CW

“Spelling D-Y-I-N-G. Camp.” —SR

“I love when musicians teach me how to spell.” —ET

“Hey kids, spelling is fun!” —SM

“I wonder if she lost a spelling bee as a kid and it still haunts her to this day, hence spelling in the song.” —CW

Track 6: “So High School”

“OMG I LOVE THIS ONE. It sounds like ’90s/Cranberries.” —CW

“This is giving old-school Taylor.” —SR

“I know someone said ‘Alchemy’ was Travis but this is the first obvi Travis song.” —ET

“She 1000% watched American Pie with Travis on a Saturday night. No truer words have ever been spoken.” —AM

“Rhyming ‘spin the bottle’ with Aristotle.” —DS

“Travis knows one of these things.” —SM

“This is the song that made my husband say, ‘I can't. It's too much Taylor for one morning.’” —AM

“I feel that.” —SM

“Man, this is taking me back to high school (junior high, really, though) because I did, in fact, watch American Pie with my crush at the time. So relatable, Tay.” —CW

“Okay, but this is like a better version of the song everyone predicted she would write about him to make fun of her. It's so good so they can choke.” —ET

“Lmao not ‘Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto.’ That absolutely happened with Trav's bros.” —CW

Track 7: “I Hate It Here”

“‘Like you are a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy,’ well okay.” —DS

“Wait, is this about Joe?” —SR

“It's like the ‘lonely’ speech from Eras Tour, where she said she was lonely while writing Folklore.—ET

“I need to dig into this more, but I think Dessner might have produced the Joe songs?” —AM

“Which decade would Taylor Swift choose to live in? ‘I’D SAY THE 1830S EXCEPT FOR THE RACISM AND GETTING MARRIED FOR THE HIGHEST BID.’” —DS

Track 8: “thanK you aIMee”

“This annoys me, I'm so over the Kim thing.” —SM

“I LOVE petty Taylor.” —CW

“Wouldn't wanna be Kim rn.” —ET

“I think Kim is doing just fine tbh lol. They both are. In fact they probably haven’t disliked each other in years and just get to enjoy exponentially increasing fame as a result of their alleged beef.” —DS

“Remember Britney’s ‘If You Seek Amy’? Same thing.” —DS

“Why are singers obsessed with using Amy/Aimee as their secret names?” —CW

“Dating myself but the title is giving me ‘If You C Jordan.’” —AM

“If you think back to her song ‘Mean’ (a karaoke classic for me, so I know the lyrics well), this could be about the same person. So maybe it’s more just about general haters and just using the Kim of it all to be clicky.” —DS

“Okay, but do we think North West is gonna TikTok about this in some fashion.” —CW

“‘There wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you’ is nice.” —SR

Track 9: “I Look in People’s Windows”

“I’m usually not a ‘This is so me’ about Taylor Swift girlie, but…this is so me on my block.” —SM

Track 10: “The Prophecy”

“I love when Taylor does spooky witchy vibes.” —AM

“‘I sound like an infant’ always referencing babies.” —DS

“The spooky witchy vibes give me all the Stevie Nicks feels, which is fitting especially for this album given the collab.” —CW

Track 11: “Cassandra”

“I'm liking the second set of songs even more than the first.” —AM

“She’s been spending a lot of time on Nameberry, I see.” —DS

Track 12: “Peter”

“If the first half of the album is going to start TikTok trends, the second half is great for fan edits.” —ET

“This HAS to be a Peter PAN reference, right?” —DS

“It is! Written from the POV of Wendy.” —AM

“As someone whose favorite movie growing up was Hook, I already know I'm going to have an unhealthy obsession with this one.” —AM

“Not going to lie, this song actually made me sob alone in bed last night.” —ET

“If I wasn’t happily married, I fear I’d have a not okay time with this one. I know it’s not even necessarily romantic but it’s very much giving me heart-wrenching heartbreak sorrow.” —DS

“I have to call out of work after this. I am unwell.” —CW

“We need a breakdown of everyone's sun and moon signs and how they did with this album.” —DS

“Pisces sun, Libra moon, Virgo rising. I am emotional. I love the attention to detail. I am unwell.” —CW

Track 13: “The Bolter”

“IDK why I immediately thought of Runaway Bride with this title.” —CW

“My babies were bopping in their Baby Bjorn bouncers this morning to this. A bop for a bop.” —AM

“Swift bringing back the word cad, I'm running out of ways to say I love this album.” —ET

Track 14: “Robin”

“I love all the Winnie the Pooh references/imagery.” —AM

“Fairy-tale Era!” —DS

Track 15: “The Manuscript”

“Last one! Is this about Jake? Or John?” —AM

“I’m impressed she has this much drama in her life at our age.” —SM

“Well, I have now finished my first Taylor Swift album in entirety.” —Jazmin Gathers, social media manager
