When it comes to having kids, we’re all just winging it in the end. Eva Mendes opened up about being a stay-at-home mom in a new interview, and she admitted it’s harder than she expected. We can definitely relate. Hang in there!

Mendes shares two kids with husband Ryan Gosling: 3-year-old Amada Lee, and 5-year-old Esmeralda Amada. On Kelly Clarkson’s talk show, Mendes chatted about why taking a break from acting to stay home with them has been so tough.

“People are so sweet — they really try to warn you, prep you, when you’re pregnant, but nobody can prep you. Nobody,” Mendes shared. “And nobody told me it was gonna really be a job. And a job that I needed an incredible amount of skill for, in different areas.” She lists the roles she takes on: “A chauffeur, a cook, a personal assistant to an abusive boss.” (That last one really hits home.)

Clarkson is also a mom to a 3-year-old (son Remington Alexander) and a 5-year-old (daughter River Rose), and she happily commiserated with Mendes. “[The kids] don’t appreciate it!” Clarkson sighed. “No, they don’t!” Mendes shot back. “They’re not grateful! Oh, my God, do they get grateful? Does that happen at some point?”

Going forward, Mendes thinks maybe there should be more of a barrier in place to see who’s really ready for the work: “In any other profession, you’d need to take a test or pass tests,” she reasoned. “The only test I had to pass was a pregnancy test. That doesn’t seem fair, right?” Hang in there, Eva — we promise it’ll get easier. Eventually.
