Eva Mendes Admits to Having the ‘Worst Attitude’ About Working Out: ‘I’m Kicking and Screaming’

If there was a magic pill that would enable Eva Mendes to get all the benefits of working out without actually hitting the gym, she would definitely be on board.

The 45-year-old actress works out for her “vanity” and her health, but exercising isn’t her idea of fun.

“I’m envious of women who enjoy working out, because I have the worst attitude about it,” Mendes admitted to Women’s Health for their May cover. “My vanity gets me to the gym — and obviously health reasons — but I’m kicking and screaming the whole way through.”

And these days, for Mendes, that means working out three times a week with her trainer Johana Spates, who takes her through total body workouts filled with mobility, strength, cardio and plyometrics exercises.

Though she hates working out, Mendes said that she’s finally “starting to feel like a person again” after giving birth to her two daughters with partner Ryan Gosling, Esmerelda, 4, and Amada, who turns 3 at the end of April.

She’s also focused on what she eats, out of necessity.

“I have blood work done at least twice a year because I have high blood sugar, and high cholesterol runs in my family,” Mendes said.

That means she typically eats scrambled eggs and coffee — with coconut oil or coconut sugar — for breakfast, and frequently dines on salmon and quinoa. Mendes also takes fish oil and CoQ10 supplements, but she admits to drinking a soda once or twice a week.

“I’m not squeaky-clean healthy,” she said. “I have a sweet tooth, so I can’t keep anything in the house.”
