European Film Awards: ‘Another Round’ Sweeps; Wins For Best Film, Mads Mikkelsen Best Actor, Thomas Vinterberg Best Director & Screenwriter With Tobias Lindholm

UPDATE, writethru: Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round swept the European Film Awards this evening, winning in each of its categories: Film, Director, Actor (Mads Mikkelsen) and Screenwriter (Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm). The drama that’s Denmark’s entry for the International Feature Oscar is also the biggest film at the Danish box office this year and has continued to scoop prizes from San Sebastian to London.

The story of four weary high school teachers who test the theory that a constant level of modest inebriation opens our minds to the world, takes them on a journey of self-discovery with both tragic and uplifting consequences.

On accepting the top prize during the virtual EFA ceremony, Vinterberg said, “None of my films ever could ever have been made without the support systems of my country and of European filmmaking in general. My first film was about child abuse, my second one about the same and now we’ve made a film about four heterosexual white males teaching youngsters to drink. It could never have been possible outside of this continent and I’m super proud to be awarded in this continent.”

While making Another Round, Vinterberg tragically lost his 19-year-old daughter Ida in car accident. Tonight he explained, “She loved this project, she was a part of this project — she was supposed to act in it, it was made at her school, amongst her friends in her classroom — and the only thing that made sense when she died was to carry on and make this movie for her. It’s made by all of us who love her and miss her dearly, and your votes and your award will honor her memory.”

During tonight’s virtual ceremony, Vinterberg was surrounded by Lindholm and Another Round co-star Magnus Millang as well as his family at home. Mikkelsen is currently in the UK shooting Fantastic Beasts 3, and on winning the European Actor trophy, he said, “One reason this film was made, one reason why this film was finalized is one little shining light that is not here anymore. But her light is in every frame of this film, so we dedicate it to Ida Vinterberg.”

In all this evening, more than 40 filmmakers and talent joined the event from afar. It also marked the last for Wim Wenders as longtime European Film Academy President and Marion Doring as EFA Director who are both exiting their posts. Heartfelt messages were relayed by video to the pair in Berlin from European filmmakers and actors including Istvan Szabo, Stellan Skarsgard and Pawel Pawlikowski — even German Chancellor Angela Merkel chimed in to thank them for their long service in support of European cinema.

Coming into the evening, leading nominees included Another Round as well as Jan Komasa’s Corpus Christi and Pietro Marcello’s Martin Eden, each with four nods apiece. Other prizes went to Paula Beer for European Actress in Christian Petzold’s Undine and Alexander Nanau for his documentary, Collective.

Previously announced laureates in other categories include Emmanuel Courcol’s The Big Hit as European Comedy — the movie opened the abridged Cannes Film Festival in October this year. Also earlier taking EFAs were Franco/Spanish Josep from director Aurel in the European Animated Feature category, as well as Cristina Casali for her production design in The Personal History Of David Copperfield.
