Ethan and Maya Hawke have shared a cover of the Willie Nelson deep cut, “We Don’t Run,” which will appear on an upcoming compilation from the venerable reissue/archival label, Light in the Attic.

Light in the Attic & Friends — out Nov. 24 for Record Store Day Black Friday — will feature an array of artists covering various far-flung rarities Light in the Attic has released over the years. The compilation was borne out of LITA’s Cover Series, and will feature a handful of previously issued recordings, as well as nearly a dozen new ones.

One of those new recordings is the Hawkes’ rendition of “We Don’t Run,” which is exactly as charming and delightful as you’d hope for a father-daughter duet (something near the end of the tune even makes the two start laughing in the middle of the vocal take). “We Don’t Run” originally appeared on Nelson’s 1996 song Spirit, which LITA reissued in 2021.

“This song is off Willie Nelson’s brilliant album Spirit, which has been a mainstay in our home since it was released in 1996,” Ethan Hawke said in a statement. “Everybody needs a good anthem song. This is one of the best.”

Along with the Hawkes singing Willie Nelson, the new songs on Light in the Attic & Friends includes Cameron Bethany covering D’Angelo, Mary Lattimore covering Hiroshi Yoshimura, and Acetone covering Jim Sullivan. There’ll also be a couple of special collaborations including Vashti Bunyan and Devendra Banhart’s rendition of Lynn Castle’s “How Could You Let Me Go”; Steve Gunn and Bridget St. John’s version of Michael Chapman’s “Rabbit Hills,” and an all-star offering from Swamp Dogg, John C. Reilly, Jenny Lewis and Tim Heidecker, who joined forced to perform the Louvin Brothers’ “The Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea.”

Light in the Attic & Friends will also feature previously released offerings from Mac DeMarco, Iggy Pop and Zig Zags, Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band, BadBadNotGood featuring Jonah Yano, Mark Lineman, and Angel Olsen.

As for the Hawkes, Ethan just directed Maya in a new movie, Wildcat, about the celebrated author Flannery O’Connor (played by Maya). The film had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Ethan nearly missed the premiere because of multiple canceled flights. Luckily, he was able to jump on a Greyhound bus and get there just in time.
