Ethan Embry & Margarita Levieva Join Indie Drama ‘The Gymnast’

EXCLUSIVE: Ethan Embry (Grace and Frankie) and Margarita Levieva (The Deuce) are in production in Pittsburgh on The Gymnast, a new indie marking the narrative feature debut of writer-director Charlotte Glynn. Starring alongside them is newcomer Britney Wheeler, a gymnast from upstate New York, who was discovered after a nationwide casting search, and Will Mossek (Life & Beth).

Set in Pittsburgh, 1993, The Gymnast follows an aspiring Olympic gymnast and her single father who has dedicated himself to his daughter’s success. When the young athlete suffers a potentially career-ending injury, their relationship suffers as they fight to discover who they are without gymnastics.

Pic’s producer is Ricky Tollman (Run This Town, Jonathan). Max Mooney is co-producing, with Randy Manis (Murderball, The Calling), Luke Spears, Henry Simonds, Offer Egozy, Liesl Wilke and Kate Geller serving as executive producers. In addition to the Sundance Institute’s Catalyst program, the project has been supported by The Gotham Film & Media Institute.

After wrapping up a seven-season run on Netflix’s Grace and Frankie, Embry has been seen on The CW’s Gotham Knights, and in the Gerard Butler pic Last Seen Alive. In addition to series like Stargirl and Sneaky Pete, he’s also appeared in recent years in acclaimed features like First Man and Blindspotting, from Damien Chazelle and Carlos López Estrada, respectively.

Best known for roles in films like Adventureland and The Invisible, Levieva has also been seen in notable titles like The Lincoln Lawyer, For Ellen, James White, Sleeping with Other People and The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Most recently starring on HBO’s The Deuce, she’ll next be seen on Star Wars series The Acolyte and Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again.

Most recently, Glynn wrote and directed The Immaculate Reception, a short that was named a Vimeo Staff Pick after world premiering at Sundance, going on to win the Special Jury Award at the New Orleans Film Festival. She also previously helmed the feature doc Rachel Is, which played the True/False Film Festival and had its broadcast premiere on PBS’ America ReFramed.
