Errol Morris explores a CIA conspiracy in harrowing trailer for new Netflix series Wormwood

Netflix’s latest true-crime series mixes documentary and scripted storytelling to explore a CIA conspiracy theory.

On Monday, the streaming service released a new trailer for Wormwood, legendary documentary filmmaker Errol Morris’ (The Thin Blue Line) forthcoming six-part series that dives into the suspicious death of Frank Olson, an Army scientist who plummeted to his death in New York in 1953. Was he thrown out of the window, or did he die by suicide? How involved was the CIA? How does this all connect to the CIA’s mind-control program MKUltra? Those are all questions that the documentary, which features interviews, archival footage, and scripted scenes (starring Peter Sarsgaard as Olson), aims to answer.

Here’s the official description from Netflix:

Directed by boundary-breaking filmmaker Errol Morris, Wormwood explores the limits of knowledge about the past and the lengths we’ll go in our search for the truth. A twisting, evolving story of one man’s sixty-year quest to identify the circumstances of his father’s mysterious death. Combining a virtuosic performance by Peter Sarsgaard with Morris’ legendary interview style, Wormwood examines this case from every possible angle, bringing the viewer face-to-face with some of the United States’ darkest secrets. Wormwood sets a new standard for nonfiction filmmaking and finds Morris working on his grandest canvas yet.

Wormwood will arrive on Netflix and in select theaters Dec. 15.
