New Erie-area eateries now open include Gurkha Grill, Bean & Bear Cafe, Heavenly Handbaked

The Erie-area restaurateurs have been busy this past month. New places have opened up all over town.

Gurkha Grill

1214 E. 38th St., 814-520-5561. Owner Mohan Khadka said Gurkha Grill serves Indian food, and that business, mostly takeout, is picking up since he opened about a month ago. The store hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The store can seat 15, but most of their business is takeout, he said.

Bean & Bear Cafe

222 W. Plum St., Edinboro. Bean & Bear opened two weeks ago at this location, just in time for Edinboro's homecoming last weekend. Hours may vary for a while, but for now they are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, though they were closed Monday. The company was founded by Katie and Jason Spangenbergs, both Edinboro University and General McLane graduates. They feature coffee and espresso and homebaked food. The place is named after cat Muenster "Bear" and dog-in-law Fletcher "Bean." For more information, visit beanandbearcafe.com, or their Facebook page at facebook.com/beanandbearedinboro. Triple D's

Taste of Love, the soul food restaurant that recently left the Flagship City Food Hall, 22 North Park Row, left a spot open that will now be occupied by a second location of Triple D's, which also includes a food truck. In July, owner Darrell Roberts closed his brick and mortar store at 3512 Liberty Plaza due to demand for the food truck. He has run Triple D's since 2021.

"(Triple D's) grew out of a hot dog cart," Roberts said, adding that in 2020 he was working as an emotional support aide and coached basketball in the Erie School District. After the pandemic hit, he decided to try following a dream.

"I took a chance on myself, and family and friends helped," he said. "At first it was rocky, but I'm still going. You can't ever give up on your dream. A lot of people have been asking me, 'When are you coming downtown?'"

He plans to open the food hall location Oct. 10 with the same menu as the trailer, including chicken and waffles, grits, a famous steak bagel ("what we are known for"), salads and other foods served as boxed meals that people can grab "at reasonable prices," he said.
