EXCLUSIVE: Isabel Hagen’s Indie dramedy On A String just wrapped principal photography in New York City.

Musician-turned-comedian Hagen (writer-director) stars alongside Dylan Baker (Dream Scenario, The Good Wife/Good Fight), Frederick Weller (BlacKkKlansman, In Plain Sight), Eric Bogosian (Uncut Gems, AMC’s Interview With the Vampire) & Emmy Winner Jamie Lee (HBO’s Crashing). Concert violinist and author Ling Ling Huang (Natural Beauty) also stars with newcomer John Kroner and Charlotte Ray Rosenberg (Sneaky Pete, FBI: Most Wanted). Hagen is known for her late-night appearances on Jimmy Fallon, and as a New Face of Comedy in 2019 for the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal.

More from Deadline

Inspired by Hagen’s real-life experiences, the pic follows a recent Juilliard graduate and classical violist (Hagen) who now plays unconventional gigs in New York City that insert her into the personal lives of strangers and entangle her with the married father (Weller) of her violin student. When her toxic cellist ex-boyfriend (Kroner) encourages her to audition for the Philharmonic, her string quartet begins to disintegrate. As Isabel finds herself increasingly enmeshed with her quirky musician family and father (Baker), she must decide whether to turn her back on the one thing she’s devoted her entire life to.

The musical performances in the film are actual live-captured performances by the cast, as the musician characters are played by professional musicians, such as Huang, violinist Delaney Harter, cellist Jacob Yates, and Hagen’s brother, conductor and pianist Oliver Hagen.

Hagan acts as executive producer alongside Charlotte Ray Rosenberg, Hannah Dweck & Theodore Schaefer via their Dweck Productions (The Adults, We’re all Going to the World’s Fair) and Jonathan Daniel Brown (Coup!). Producers are Hagen, Olivia Vessel and Annie McGrath, alongside Torrance Shepherd (Severance) and Alex Vara (Only the Good Survive).

Isabel Hagen is rep’d by Tom Ingegno at Omnipop East Coast; Eric Bogosian is rep’d by UTA, and Brookside Artist Management; Dylan Baker is rep’d by Innovative Artists and Viking Entertainment.
