For the past 10 consecutive years, at least one pair or larger group of female costars have gone to battle in the Primetime Emmy category for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress. These recent cases account for more than one-third of the 37 cast mate clashes that have occurred here over the past five decades. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to find out more about the many instances of dual, triple, or quintuple nominations for featured ladies from non-continuing programs.

In 2022, “The White Lotus” made history as the first TV program of any kind to produce five same-year, same-category female acting Emmy notices. At that point, the only shows that had even earned four such bids were “Game of Thrones” (2019) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2021), both of which accomplished the feat in the drama supporting category. Of the 10 actresses who each appear on this list of battles multiple times, four – Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Frances Conroy, and Sarah Paulson – landed that distinction thanks to their work on “American Horror Story.” With her three entries for that show and one for “Warm Springs” (2005), Bates shows up the most on this roster, followed by Mare Winningham with three appearances (“George Wallace,” 1998; “Mildred Pierce,” 2011; “Dopesick,” 2022).

These 37 showdowns have led to 20 wins for the involved actresses, about two-thirds of whom achieved their victories for limited series. The earliest and latest champions for multi-part programs were Juliet Mills (“QB VII,” 1975) and Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus,” 2022), while those from TV movies were Jane Alexander (“Playing for Time,” 1981) – who was later awarded over Bates for “Warm Springs” – and Julia Ormond (“Temple Grandin,” 2010).
