Emmy Predictions via The Feinberg Forecast: Scott’s Updated Picks, Featuring 11 New Categories

SINCE THE LAST UPDATE

This week’s Feinberg Forecast includes 11 categories that were not a part of last week’s, including those covering writing (drama, comedy, limited or anthology series, variety series, variety special and nonfiction program), reality programs (structured, unstructured and competition), game shows and animated programs. It is also the first edition to include Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, which has exploded since its April 11 debut, has officially been entered for Emmys consideration as a limited series and will seriously contend in several categories.

More from The Hollywood Reporter

Over the past week, L.A.-area members of the TV Academy have been surrounded by — and, in many cases, invited to — high-profile FYC or FYC-adjacent events. PaleyFest’s lineup of panels included The Morning Show (with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon), Loki (Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson), Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry David), The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (Stephen Colbert) and Late Night With Seth Meyers (Seth Meyers). Doing their own events were HBO/Max (The Jinx on April 15) and Apple (Slow Horses on April 20), among others.

Additionally, individual contenders were highlighted in a variety of outside-the-box ways. As part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, Ken Jennings, host of ABC’s Jeopardy!, introduced screenings on April 18 and 19; Jodie Foster, a star of HBO/Max’s True Detective: Night Country, had her handprints and footprints immortalized in cement at the TCL Chinese Theatre on April 19; and on April 20, Diane Lane, a star of FX’s Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, attended a screening of her 1979 film A Little Romance.

Meanwhile, on April 18, Michael Douglas, star of Apple’s Franklin, made an extended appearance promoting the show on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS. On April 20, Peacock scared the bejesus out of some, including yours truly, by having a masked/caped man deliver an invitation to an event promoting its Alan Cumming-hosted reality competition program The Traitors. And that night, Hannah Einbinder, a star of Max’s Hacks, recorded a stand-up special at the El Rey Theatre.

Finally, as FX prepares to unveil its 10th — and, for now at least, final — episode of Shōgun, a massive hit with critics and viewers, on Tuesday night, there is growing speculation about whether the network will order additional episodes, which would, of course, transform it from a limited series into a drama series. This season’s drama series field is weaker than it has ever been, so Shōgun would probably cruise to a win there — but I suspect it would also do just fine if it remains where it is. Stay tuned.

NOTE BEFORE READING

(1) This forecast, assembled by The Hollywood Reporter’s executive editor of awards coverage Scott Feinberg, reflects Scott’s best attempt to predict the behavior of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, not his personal preferences.

(2) Unlike many other lists, the objective of the forecast is not to include every show or person that is eligible for Emmys recognition, only the top tier of contenders.

(3) Nobody can watch every Emmy-eligible show, and Scott is no exception. He arrives at these projections by at least sampling as many contenders as possible, consulting with TV Academy members, reading reviews, analyzing awards campaigns and referencing the results of other award shows, as well as the historical preferences of the TV Academy.

(4) Under program categories, you can now find listed each program’s season that is eligible, its platform, release date (of the first episode of the eligible season) and Rotten Tomatoes scores (the first from critics, the second from audiences). We also note if the TV Academy has recognized prior seasons of the program in that category with a nomination (*) or award (^).

(5) The forecast will be updated regularly to reflect new developments. We encourage you to bookmark and return to this URL to find the latest update. (Older versions will be preserved and linked to at the bottom.)
