The 2023 Emmys ceremony celebrated 75 years of television by staging reunions of some of your favorite shows, including FX’s long-running comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Cast members Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito came out on stage and poked fun at the Emmy Awards for never nominating them throughout their 16 seasons (and counting), but is that factually correct? Let’s consult the history books!

While it’s true that “Sunny” has never been nominated for any of the main Primetime categories — i.e. series, acting, writing and directing — the half-hour show did actually receive three bids in the little-known category of Best Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or Variety Program. “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” lost those three races to Nickelodeon’s “Supah Ninjas” in 2013 and to Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” in 2014 and 2015.

When Olson called it an “honor” to be presenting at the 75th annual Emmy Awards, Howerton was shocked the ceremony has been on that long because he’s “never even been here.” Day then wondered aloud if they’ve “been doing this every single year” without them. Watch the video above.

Olson chimed in that the Emmy producers should have built them a bar set to go along with the other reunion set pieces like the “Martin” living room, the “Ally McBeal” bathroom and the “American Horror Story: Murder House” property. “Where’s Paddy’s Pub?” she asked the crowd.

DeVito calmly admitted that he’d won an Emmy Award for “Taxi,” a show that garnered 34 bids and 18 wins over its five seasons. And his partner Rhea Perlman took home four Emmys for “Cheers.” That’s when Olson asserted, “34 nominations in five years versus zero nominations in 16 years? That math is bad!”

McElhenney closed out the gag by mentioning that his FX series “Welcome to Wrexham” claimed five Emmys last week at the Creative Arts, and so he “went backstage and looked” for the “Sunny” trophies, but sadly couldn’t find them.

What did you think of the “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” reunion on the Emmys stage? Is it high time for the show to get into the main Emmy categories like Best Comedy Series, acting, writing and directing? Be sure to sound off down in the comments section.
