Emmys 2020: Watchmen, Mrs. Maisel, Succession and Ozark Lead Nominations; Netflix Leapfrogs HBO

Nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning— virtually, by Leslie Jones (SNL), Laverne Cox (Orange Is the New Black), Josh Gad (Frozen) and Tatiana Maslany (Perry Mason) — and HBO’s Watchmen led the pack with 26 total nominations, including for Outstanding Limited Series and stars Regina King and Jeremy Irons.

Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel placed second with 20 total nods, followed by Netflix’s Ozark and HBO’s Succession, which amassed 18 apiece.

Going by outlet, after slipping to second place in 2019, Netflix reclaimed bragging rights this year with 160 (!) total nominations to HBO’s 107. Rounding out the Top 5 were NBC (47), ABC (36) and FX (33). Among new streamers, Disney+ racked up 19 nominations to Apple TV+’s 18 and Quibi’s 10.

Some (but far from all!) of the notable first-time individual Emmy nominees include Cate Blanchett, D’Arcy Carden, Billy Crudup, William Jackson Harper, Annie Murphy, Kaitlin Olson, Octavia Spencer, Cecily Strong and Zendaya.

This year’s ceremony, in whatever socially distant form it takes, will air Sunday, Sept. 20 on ABC, hosted for a third time by late-night TV vet Jimmy Kimmel.
