See the Emmy Winners and Presenters from the 2020 Virtual Ceremony

The 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards are currently underway, and to say this year’s event is unprecedented is an understatement. The global health crisis saw the actual ceremony abandon much of what it’s known for: Gone is the red carpet and the crowded auditorium filled with presenters and nominees. In its place is five nights of mini-events, held on the official Emmys website and on FXX, with each preliminary night lasting a rather brisk hour in length. On Sept. 20, the event heads over to ABC and ABC.com for the Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

With so much change there have been some growing pains. Speeches are all pre-recorded this year, with audiences sometimes watching the same speech for a winner several times. On top of that, awkward banter has become even more awkward as it attempts to navigate the line between scripted and off-the-cuff. It is interesting that for a show going online — where things like censoring and length sound like they go out the window — the Emmys became even more stringent in their online presentation.

That is on top of participants either rushing through speeches, in a vestige of the old ceremony, or not knowing the best way to properly film themselves. And if you have been looking for unique teasers or ads this year, despite the show being virtual, the use of commercials have been sporadic and more in-line with the series streaming on YouTube than promoting anything television related. It’s been a year!
