Hot Streak: It has been a while since the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category has had any sort of streak. The last time really was when Regina King had back-to-back wins for “American Crime” in 2015 and 2016. It was the first time the category ever had a back-to-back winner. Since then, the category has had a mix of winners at every level, with different actresses from different projects at different networks being recognized. An HBO win this year could start a hot streak though.

The nomination round of voting took place from June 16 to June 27, with the official Emmy nominations announced on Tuesday, July 12. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be given out over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4, with an edited presentation on the ceremonies to be broadcast on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 8:00 p.m. ET on FXX. Finally, the 74rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Monday, September 12, and air live on NBC at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

We talk a lot about the Emmys wanting to spread the wealth, and trying to not have one show sweep, but it is disappointing to see when the TV Academy gets a little lazy with acknowledging supporting performances. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie has seven nominees, more than most categories, and yet only represents two shows.

Even before last year’s Emmys, which actually did happen after the full first season of “The White Lotus” had aired, it seemed like a forgone conclusion that Jennifer Coolidge would be getting her TV awards due come fall 2022. And it’s all happening, and it is probably exciting for her that it will be with co-stars Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney, and Connie Britton by her side, but HBO’s now anthology series does have its naysayers.

“Dopesick” stars Kaitlyn Dever and Mare Winningham offer a much different, much more tear-jerking story arc, with the former thoughtfully capturing what it is like to be an inadvertent drug addict. For anyone who feels that “The White Lotus” did not work for them, and there are quite a few to have vocalized that opinion, there is only one other option to take.
