Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Robert Downey Jr. (“The Sympathizer”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Jonathan Bailey (“Fellow Travelers”), Hugh Grant (“The Regime”), John Hawkes (“True Detective: Night Country”) and Treat Williams (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, all six of our Emmy Experts predict a victory for Downey: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). He plays various villainous roles, all representing the American establishment, on HBO’s adaptation of the award-winning 2015 novel “The Sympathizer” by Viet Thanh Nguyen. Downey is a prior Emmy nominee for “Ally McBeal” (2001) and he just recently won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Oppenheimer” (2023).

Based on the rankings of our Emmyologists, Pullman is in second place to take home the trophy this year. He’s already been nominated at the Critics Choice Awards and Independent Spirit Awards for his role as chemist Calvin Evans, the love interest of Brie Larson‘s Elizabeth Zott, in Apple TV+’s popular “Lessons in Chemistry.”

Bailey comes in third place, according to our awards pundits. He prevailed at the Critics Choice Awards for “Fellow Travelers” for playing congressional staffer Tim Laughlin, the secret lover of Matt Bomer‘s Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, in the Showtime period piece. The English actor’s prior claim to fame was “Bridgerton,” which nabbed him an ensemble SAG Award nomination in 2021.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor category include Paul Walter Hauser (“Black Bird”), Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Evan Peters (“Mare of Easttown”), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Watchmen”) and Ben Whishaw (“A Very English Scandal”). Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
