Emmy Experts predict ‘Mr. Monk’s Last Case’ will win Best TV Movie

Having trouble predicting what will win Best TV Movie at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” The other potential nominees at this early stage are Hulu’s “Quiz Lady,” Showtime’s “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” Prime Video’s “Red, White and Royal Blue” and Hulu’s “No One Will Save You” — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, six out of our eight Emmy Experts predict a victory for “Mr. Monk’s Last Case”: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). Tony Shalhoub reprises his three-time Emmy-winning role of the obsessive-compulsive Detective Adrian Monk, whose infamous quirks return during the Covid pandemic. Already this awards season, the telefilm has earned bids at the Critics Choice Awards, SAG Awards, PGA Awards and WGA Awards.

The remaining two Emmyologists — Peter Travers (ABC) and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — instead believe “Quiz Lady” will prevail. Awkwafina and Sandra Oh star as estranged sisters in this wild comedy in which they have to make money fast in order to cover their mother’s gambling debts. Note that “Quiz Lady” is coming off of a shocking victory for Best TV Movie at the Critics Choice Awards.

Also looking strong in our pundits’ rankings is “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.” Kiefer Sutherland (two-time Emmy winner for starring in and producing “24”) leads the cast as Lt. Commander Queeg, who is relieved from duty by Jake Lacy‘s Lieutenant Maryk after showing signs of mental instability. This film serves as the latest adaptation of Herman Wouk‘s 1952 novel “The Caine Mutiny.”

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best TV Movie category include “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” in 2023, “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” in 2022, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” in 2021, “Bad Education” in 2020 and “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” in 2019. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
