Midway through the 2023 Emmy Awards, host Anthony Anderson declared the night to be the “Chocolate Emmys,” adding “We are killing it tonight! MLK Day and Juneteenth all rolled into one.” At that point in the show, it was a great night for people of color, including Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, and Niecy Nash-Betts taking home top prizes — Brunson a welcome surprise in the Lead Actress in a Comedy category, Edebiri establishing early that The Bear would be a major player as the night progressed, and Nash-Betts adding to her trophy collection for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
That Nash-Betts previously won a Critics Choice Award for the same performance literally one year ago today didn’t come up. In general, there was little discussion of sensitive topics within the industry, like the recent labor actions that pushed the Emmys to the same Monday as Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Instead, the entire ceremony did something pretty special — and full-on celebrated television.
As host, Anderson ran a relatively tight ship, though a runner featuring Anderson’s mother serving as the person to call time on any speeches that went long only worked in fits and spurts. (Trust John Oliver to have the best response, riffing playfully with her.) And he brought plenty of passion to the night’s theme — looking back at the past, with cast reunions paying tribute to significant series from Emmys history.
Really, whoever came up with the idea to have the reunion tributes to older shows also present awards was pretty brilliant. The arrival of each significant cast reunion — including Martin, Grey’s Anatomy, Cheers, and Ally McBeal — provided a constant degree of surprise throughout the show, while also efficiently moving the ceremony through each category.
Maybe that’s why, by around 7:10 p.m. PT, there were only four awards left to hand out — the next 20 minutes featured the organization GLAAD receiving the Governor’s Award, and a lengthy In Memoriam that attempted to cover the last 16 months of those we’ve lost. And by that point, there weren’t many surprises waiting: It was pretty clear that those final four awards were going to Succession and The Bear.
Yet despite those moments of predictability, this was one of the best-produced Emmy ceremonies in years — especially because the producers were able to avoid rushing the night’s big winners through their moments. And while the night was dominated by three shows in particular, there were a few fun surprises and a few significant milestones. So check out the full winners list below.
