Emmy Awards 2019: See the complete list of winners

There was no host at the 71st Emmy Awards on Sunday night, but there were plenty of winners — and more than a few upsets.

Game of Thrones entered Emmy season by leading all shows with a whopping 32 nominations, including nods for nine actors. (HBO’s fantasy drama already picked up 10 last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmys.) Just before Michael Douglas called a wrap on the festivities (which ended on time!), Thrones claimed the Outstanding Drama Series for the fourth consecutive time, while Peter Dinklage had triumphed in his supporting category earlier in the night. That fourth Outstanding Drama Series trophy tied GoT with Mad Men, The West Wing, Hill Street Blues, and L.A. Law for most wins in the category, and Thrones tied its own record for most Emmy wins in a year with 12.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which had led the comedy pack with 20 nods, could not defend its Outstanding Comedy Series crown, though it picked up the first two awards of the telecast with acting wins for Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein. Nor could Veep, which had claimed the trophy in its three last years of eligibility. Veep, which boasted nine nominations, was shut out tonight (as was fellow nine-time nominee This Is Us). Mrs. Maisel and Veep were edged out in the Outstanding Comedy Series by… Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s dangerous darkhorse Fleabag.

And that wasn’t the star/writer/creator’s biggest victory of the night: Waller-Bridge claimed the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy trophy, besting Veep star — and perennial favorite — Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who entered the night with a chance to break her own record for most acting wins (tied with Cloris Leachman, at eight). Waller-Bridge also took home the writing Emmy, and the show nabbed the directing trophy. And her other creation, Killing Eve, brought home a trophy for Jodie Comer in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.

There were non-Waller-Bridge surprises too. Ozark star Julia Garner took the supporting actress category (over four Game of Thrones actresses), while Ozark star/director/producer Jason Bateman won the directing category (over three episodes of Game of Thrones). Meanwhile, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong grabbed the writing trophy, beating out such competition as Killing Eve, Game of Thrones, and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Other winners: HBO’s limited series Chernobyl picked up three trophies during the telecast, including Outstanding Limited Series, (adding to its haul of seven last weekend). Barry star/co-creator Bill Hader also had another confirmed kill in the Outstanding Lead Actor category. RuPaul ruled once again in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category, with RuPaul’s Drag Race winning its second consecutive statue (and RuPaul also) winning the host trophy for the fourth year in a row. In addition, Pose star Billy Porter made a little history when he triumphed in the Lead Actor in a Drama category, and Saturday Night Live represented broadcast TV by prevailing in the Outstanding Variety Sketch category. To find out who else had a big, shiny night, check out this full list of winners from the 71st Emmy Awards, which aired live on Fox from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
