Thursday's Emmerdale (September 9) picked up at a dramatic point, after evil newcomer Russ was holding Victoria and his ex-wife Wendy hostage in the cafe.

Russ (Rob Jarvis) ordered Victoria Hudgens (Isabel Hodgins) to open the safe upstairs, which was where David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) was hiding after trying to help the two women.

David hid under the desk and was able to go undetected as Victoria opens the safe, and Russ took the money he was originally promised.

Russ then growled at Victoria and Wendy Posner (Susan Cookson) to go back downstairs to call the bank, so that Victoria could transfer the inheritance money he believed he was owed.

The man also made vile comments about his son Lee raping Victoria, and vowed that he was ready to kill her unless she gave him the money.

David eventually managed to call his step-son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) to alert him about the siege. "There's a guy in there, with a gun..." David whispered to Jacob.

However, Russ overheard David and threatened to shoot Victoria unless he came out.

"Why don't you come out or I'll blow her pretty head off," Russ said, leaving David little choice as to what to do next. David replied: "Let these two go then, keep me."

"We can say this was a misunderstanding," Wendy then pleaded her ex-husband.

Whilst the three hostages were trying to convince Russ to free them, Jacob called the police, resulting in armed officers surrounding the building promptly.

As Russ went to answer a call from the hostage negotiator, Victoria tried to attack him in order disarm him.

A physical struggle ensued, resulting in a gunshot going off. Viewers could only see the scene from Jacob's perspective outside, wondering whose life is at stake...
