An overwhelmed Emma Stone won Best Actress for Poor Things at the Oscars for her portrayal of Bella Baxter, a surprise upset over expected winner Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon. Stone took the stage in tears, pointing out her broken dress as she grabbed her award. “I’m pretty sure it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,'” she quipped.

Stone thanked her fellow nominees, including Gladstone. “Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily: I share this with you. I’m in awe of you and it’s been such an honor to do all of this together and I hope we get to do more together,” Stone said.

She added: “Thank you for the gift of a lifetime in Bella Baxter.” The actress offered her thanks to all of the people involved in making Poor Things. “It’s not about me. It’s about a team that came together to make something greater than the sum of its parts.” She gave special thanks to director Yorgos Lanthimos. “That is the best part about making movies, all of us together and I am so deeply honored to share this with every cast member, with every crew member, and with every person who poured their love into making this film,” Stone said.

She also thanked her family, including her daughter, “who’s going to be three in three days, and has turned our lives technicolor,” the actress said. “I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.”

Stone has been nominated for five Oscars and previously won Best Actress for La La Land. This year, she was nominated for both Best Actress and Best Picture, as a producer of Poor Things.
