Emma Stone In Talks To Star In Untitled Pic For Universal With Dave McCary In Talks To Direct

EXCLUSIVE: Fresh off a second Oscar win for her performance in Poor Things, Emma Stone is starting to put together her future slate. She is now in talks for an untitled film at Universal Pictures with Dave McCary, her husband, in talks to direct.

Patrick Kang and Michael Levin, supervising producers of NBC and UTV’s Young Rock, wrote the original spec screenplay for the film. Details on the plot are under wraps.

Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine will produce through 21 Laps. Michael H. Weber will produce. Stone, McCary and Ali Herting are also in talks to produce through Fruit Tree.

Universal’s Senior EVP Production Development Erik Baiers and Creative Executive Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.

Stone had a busy with not only her Oscar-winning performance in Poor Things but also her acclaimed performance the Showtime series The Curse (she also exec produced the series). She can be seen next in Searchlight’s Kinds of Kindness, where she also serves as executive producer and which just landed a Competition slot at next month’s Cannes Film Festival. Stone is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.

McCary recently produced A Real Pain for Searchlight, Problemista for A24 and executive produced The Curse. Previously, he directed Brigsby Bear and was a writer-director on SNL for five seasons. He is repped by Mosaic and Myman Greenspan.

Kang and Levin were most recently supervising producers on Young Rock, having been on all three seasons for NBC/UTV, and producers on two seasons of Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. for Disney+. Previously, they staffed on Trial & ErrorMighty Ducks and Perfect Harmony. They met as assistants on How I Met Your Mother. Levin also co-hosts the Philadelphia 76ers’ “The Rights To Ricky Sanchez: The Sixers Podcast.”

Kang and Levin are repped by Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, which brought the spec screenplay to Universal. They are also repped by attorney Sean Marks.
