Emma Stone Reveals She Had A Black Eye Before Her Wedding After Incident With Refrigerator Door Handle

The 'Poor Things' star wed comedian Dave McCary in 2020, and the couple share two-year-old daughter, Louise Jean

Emma Stone’s wedding to husband Dave McCary did not go off without a hitch.

The actress, 35, revealed on the latest episode of the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett that she suffered a unexpected injury in the days leading up to her nuptials.

“The week that I got married, I did open a refrigerator and the handle broke off and I got a black eye,” the Poor Things star revealed.

“And that’s where it stops,” she said with a laugh, before agreeing with Hayes' comment that the injury-prone actress “needs a helmet.”

"I need a helmet and extensive therapy," she joked.

Stone married McCary, comedian and writer, in 2020, a source confirmed to PEOPLE at the time.

Like her relationship with the former Saturday Night Live staffer, the La La Land star has not shared many details about the ceremony publicly, but McCary did announce their engagement in December 2019 with a photo of the couple and Stone’s ring — a pearl set in a diamond halo.

McCary popped the question just over two years after PEOPLE confirmed their relationship in late October 2017. At the time, a source told PEOPLE that the couple had been dating for three months.

The pair originally planned to wed in March 2020 but postponed their nuptials due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The comedy power couple met when she hosted SNL in late 2016 — her third of five stints as host.

"She is professional in every way, very talented and focused on her work, and Dave respects that,” an industry source told PEOPLE in December 2019.

“He totally supports her, and is unselfish in his desire for her success. Those are great qualities in a man for someone like Emma,” the insider said at the time. “She is impressed by his talent and respects him immensely.”

The source also noted that both Stone and McCary let each other shine in their respective careers.

"Two highly successful people in the entertainment business don’t always give the other the space they need,” they told PEOPLE. “But he encourages her, and she loves that.”

The pair made their award show debut in January 2019 at the SAG Awards, and McCary has since supported Stone during many career milestones.

The couple expanded their family in March 2021, when they welcomed a baby girl, Louise Jean, a source confirmed to PEOPLE at the time.

Days after she was born, a source told PEOPLE that the actress was thrilled to be a mom, explaining, "Emma has been very excited about the baby. She has been private but said that she was feeling great. She always has a huge smile when she is with Dave."

In May 2021, Stone gave a rare comment about parenting Louise Jean, 2½, during an interview with British presenter Mark Heyes.

“It's very, very exciting. I feel lucky with what lockdown has been but it has been an insane year.”
