Did Emma Stone almost play Sue Storm in the MCU Fantastic Four?

On The Hot Mic Podcast, insider Jeff Sneider reported that, as a rumor from Deadline reporter Justin Kroll has stated, Marvel is building the team around Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman. Because the company views it as the “standout role,” Marvel Studios went for a top actress for the role, with Emma Stone reportedly being the first choice.

Sneider noted that since the A-list actress “knows her worth,” she was open to the part with a salary for $20 million, though Marvel did not want to pay that much to ensure there’s enough money “for the rest of the team.” He also explained that Adam Driver, who is apparently linked to play Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, is not on Stone’s pay level, supporting the idea that Marvel is aiming to more adequately spread out the salaries for the actors of the titular team.

“I’m told that they went to Emma Stone, and for 72 hours, Emma Stone was looking like Sue Storm,” Sneider stated. “We’ll see if Sue Storm ends up being a true movie star role, or someone who they go to for a rising star role which is probably where it’s head.”

Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four will be directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman from a screenplay being rewritten by Josh Friedman, based on a draft from Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts was originally slated to direct the project but decided to drop out in order to take a break from the superhero genre. The movie is set to debut during Phase 6 of the MCU on February 14, 2025.

The Fantastic Four comic debuted in 1961. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, it was the first superhero team title produced by Marvel Comics and popularized famous characters like Sue Storm and Doctor Doom.
