Was Jimmy Kimmel's Poor Things joke in poor taste?

As in Academy Awards past, each Best Picture-nominated film gets a montage during the ceremony. After the clip for Poor Things played, host Jimmy Kimmel made a joke that didn't appear to sit well with star Emma Stone.

“Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV,” Kimmel joked after the montage played, seemingly referring to the uninhibited sex that Stone's character Bella Baxter engages in over the course of the Oscar-winning film.

Stone, 35, turned to her husband Dave McCary, rolled her eyes as she shook her head slightly and muttered a few words. Many viewers online thought she said "Oh my god."

Representatives for Stone did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

"[The sex] is obviously a huge part of her experience and her growth, as it is, I think, for most people in life," Stone told BBC Radio 4's Front Row back in January of her character's journey. "So for the camera to sort of shy away from that, or to say like, 'Okay, well, we'll just cut all of this out because our society functions in a particular way' ... it felt like a lack of being honest about who Bella is."

During September's New York Film Festival, director Yorgos Lanthimos explained why he didn't "shy away" from the film's sexual content.

"It was a very important part of her journey. We felt that we shouldn't shy away from it," he said. "It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspect of it."

Poor Things ended up a big winner on Sunday night, with Stone winning Best Actress, and the film picking up addition Academy Awards for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.

During her acceptance speech, Stone called out her husband McCary and their soon-to-be 3-year-old daughter Louise Jean with a lyric from Taylor Swift.

Stone won her first Best Actress Academy Award for La La Land back in 2017.
