According to 85% of Gold Derby’s 2024 Golden Globes predictors, former Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress champion Emma Stone (2016’s “La La Land”) is practically assured a repeat victory thanks to her work in the fantasy epic “Poor Things.” Assuming this decisive opinion is truly reflective of those of Golden Globes voters, it would only make sense for her to leverage that love into a same-year Best TV Comedy Actress notice for her performance on the buzzy new Showtime series “The Curse.”

Were she to prevail on her potential bids for said big screen and small screen projects, she would make history as the youngest individual to simultaneously achieve both types of acting Golden Globe wins.

SEEOscar predictions update: ‘Poor Things’ still rising in all major categories including Best Picture, Best Director …

Based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray, “Poor Things” stars Stone as a deceased woman named Bella who, after being brought back to life, embarks on a worldwide odyssey of self-discovery. The film marks Stone’s second feature-length collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos and writer Tony McNamara following 2018’s “The Favourite,” for which she received a supporting Golden Globe nomination. On “The Curse,” which is set for a November 10 premiere, Stone will appear alongside series creators Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie as Whitney, an HGTV star whose life is seemingly disrupted by supernatural forces.

If Stone does pull off dual, cross-medium Golden Globe wins in 2024, she will emulate a precedent set in 1993 by Joan Plowright, who concurrently snagged both the film and TV supporting actress prizes for “Enchanted April” and “Stalin,” respectively. The only performer who has since achieved a similar feat is Helen Mirren, who collected two lead trophies at the 2007 ceremony for the film “The Queen” and the limited series “Elizabeth I.” Whereas both Plowright and Mirren were past the age of 61 at the times of their double triumphs, Stone would only be 35.

SEEMark Ruffalo could reap Oscar riches for ‘Poor Things’

Stone would be the 45th person (and 28th woman) in 51 years to simultaneously receive Golden Globe nominations for both film and TV acting. In terms of competing as comedic lead in both areas, she will have been preceded by just five women: Carol Burnett (1973; film: “Pete ‘n’ Tillie”; TV: “The Carol Burnett Show”), Shelley Long (1985; “Irreconcilable Differences”; “Cheers”), Helen Hunt (1998; “As Good As It Gets”; “Mad About You”), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2014; “Enough Said”; “Veep”) and Lily Tomlin (2016; “Grandma”; “Grace and Frankie”).

In addition to her previously mentioned bids for “La La Land” and “The Favourite,” Stone has racked up four other film Golden Globe nominations for her starring performances in 2010’s “Easy A,” 2018’s “Battle of the Sexes” and 2021’s “Cruella” and her supporting turn in 2014’s “Birdman.” As the leader of her current film race, her closest competitors are Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”) and Margot Robbie (“Barbie”). Although not nearly as many of our users are confident about her TV campaign being successful, she does have the support of a full 25% of them and could easily win more over once her series actually premieres.
