Eminem is finally speaking out about his controversial murder-themed album. After the 47-year-old rapper released "Music To Be Murdered By" last week, it was met with a ton of criticism over what some labeled "disgusting" and "inappropriate." Many took issue with a particular lyric about Ariana Grande in which he seemingly made light of the bombing that took place after her Manchester show. Now, Eminem is addressing fans and standing his ground on the album stating that people need to "listen more closely."
What He's Saying:
Posting an open letter on his social media Thursday, Eminem spoke openly about "Music To Be Murdered By" by addressing the letter to "gentle listeners." He began his message by saying that murder has become so common in our world that society has become "obsessed" and "fascinated" by it. "I thought why not make a sport of it, and murder over beats?" he wrote before asking his fans to give him a chance to explain his thought process.
'Not For The Squeamish'
"This album was not made for the squeamish. If you are easily offended or unnerved at the screams of bloody murder, this may not be the collection for you," Eminem warned. He stated that certain collections were designed to "shock the conscience, which may cause positive action. Unfortunately, darkness has truly fallen upon us." Wrapping up his defense, Eminem wrote, "So you see, murder in this instance isn't always literal, nor pleasant. These bars are only meant for the sharpest knives in the drawer."
The Open Letter:
The controversial rapper than paralleled victims of gun violence to those offended by "Music To Be Murdered By" writing, "For the victims of this album, may you rest peacefully. For the rest of you, please listen more closely next time. Goodnight!" Eminem's surprise album and music video has a theme of gun control, but his message was warped after some fans heard a lyric about the Manchester bombing that occurred outside of an Ariana Grande concert in 2017.
His Daughter Defended Him:
In his track “Unaccommodating,” he raps the lyrics: “But I’m contemplating yelling ‘bombs away’ on the game/Like I’m outside of an Ariana Grande concert waiting.” Eminem also added an explosion sound effect over the lyrics. The track also addresses his famous feud with Machine Gun Kelly. While many listeners labeled the Ariana Grande diss as "disgusting" and accused the rapper of making light of the terrorist attack, one person had his back. His daughter, Hailie Jade, came out and defended her famous father.
