What did Eminem say in 2000? “Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner, but I just been busy.”

Well, the time is now; Eminem is set to co-produce a new documentary called Stan. The new project will be produced through Shady Films in association with Hill District Media and DIGA Studios. Paramount/MTV will also distribute the documentary. According to Variety, the documentary will detail the world of superfans and their fanatical behaviorStan will be directed by Steven Leckart and is scheduled to be released this year.

The outlet also included a synopsis for the film. “[Stan will be] a revealing, edgy, and disarmingly personal journey into the world of superfandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring artists, Eminem, and the fans that worship him.”

The Detroit native’s longtime business partner and manager, Paul Rosenberg, and Stuart Parr discussed the documentary. They insisted that the doc would be a “study” regarding the symbiotic relationship between artist and superfan.

Stans will be the opportunity for us to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fan—and in some cases, fanatics. This is a study of the relationship between fanbase and artist through the lens of one of Eminem’s most fascinating songs and one of the world’s most important entertainers,” they said in a statement.

DIGA’s Tony DiSanto also provided a statement regarding the upcoming project. He offered more detail surrounding the documentary’s mission and how Eminem’s perspective will lend itself to exploring the social phenomenon.

“Paul Rosenberg and I have known each other since my days on MTV’s TRL, a show that was driven by the power of fandom, bringing artists and their fans together,” he said. “So when he told me about the idea for this film, it felt like we had come full circle. Stans will explore the complex relationship between fame and super fandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most Iconic artists, Eminem, his music, and, especially, his most extreme fans.”

Eminem originally released his track “Stan” as a single in November 2000. The track was a part of his third studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP. Em’s song became one of the rapper’s most beloved songs for its complex storytelling and unique perspective at the time. Stan was added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2017. The term was defined as “an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity.” The word has also been viewed as a portmanteau of “stalker” and “fan.”

“Stan” has been widely accepted as one of the greatest Hip-Hop songs of all time, appearing on numerous lists since its release.
