Netflix

It's no secret that Netflix's hit series Emily in Paris has three main characters. In addition to the series' titular protagonist, Emily Cooper — played by Lily Collins — there's the city of Paris itself, which provides a dreamy backdrop for all Emily's adventures and shenanigans. And then, there's Emily's eccentric wardrobe, which in our opinion, is the real star of the show.

Emily's season 1 and 2 wardrobe is the vision of costume designers Patricia Field (who previously worked on Sex and the City) and Marylin Fitoussi. "We were looking at other films and series with American girls in Paris, like Funny Face or the episodes of Gossip Girl when Blair and Serena go to France," Collins told British Vogue in 2020 about the initial inspiration for Emily's ensembles. "At the same time, Emily had to feel like Emily rather than a version of someone else. Patricia and I were very much on the same page about creating tributes to characters that Emily loves but making the clothes her own."

For season 3, which premiered on Dec. 21, 2022, Fitoussi succeeded Field as the lead costume designer. She spoke about the third season's costume needs in an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip shared with PEOPLE, saying, "I think that this season I had even greater freedom. We have listed 14,000 pieces. I think that on Lily [Collins] we did about 43 looks."

"So, we always have to present new things, to push the limits of what we can do," she added.

Fitoussi also discussed how fashion is all about storytelling for her. "It's a bit of a calling, telling stories with clothes and making everyone feel beautiful," she explained. "Emily allows me to experiment entirely with this irreverent creative aspect where you get to break the codes of fashion, where you get to be yourself and feeling different and unique and to affirm it."

From her now-iconic bright pink coat to her heart-patterned off-the-shoulder dress, here are Lily Collins' best outfits on Emily in Paris so far.

Mixing and matching lots of different patterns, textures and colors is a Patricia Field signature, and it's perfectly done in the look Emily wore to her French class: a yellow floral Vassilis Zoulias cropped jacket, checkerboard hat and bright yellow gloves and bag. It shouldn't work, but it totally does.
