Emily Hampshire joins Kyle Meredith to talk about her role in Jake Johnson’s new Hulu film Self Reliance, which tells the story of a disillusioned man who receives an invitation to win a large cash prize by taking part in a deadly reality television game on the dark web.

The actress, known for her breakout roles in Schitt’s Creek and 12 Monkeys, speaks on how she linked up with Johnson for the role and what it was like to work for someone who tripled as the star, director, and writer. “With Jake, I was so impressed with him being able to be an actor, a writer, a director, and yet be so generous to other people around them,” she explains. “I would think I would get way too anxious.”

Hampshire also discusses her thoughts on the Ralph Waldo Emerson essay that Self Reliance takes its name from and the joy her character has in watching the mayhem unfold. Later, she touches on working with the late Norman Lear on his final project for a reboot of his classic series Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, how the script for the upcoming Season 2 of The Rig “blew her mind,” and her new graphic novel, Amelia Aierwood — Basic Witch.
