Emergency Services Cleanup After Illinois Train Derailment

Several cars of a freight train derailed and caught fire in Dupo, Illinois, on Tuesday, September 10, sending flames and black smoke into the sky.

The crash happened near Vertex Chemical Corporation and firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby buildings, local media said.

Citing officials, local media reported two schools in the area were evacuated “as a precautionary measure.”

The St Clair County Emergency Management Agency said power was cut in the nearby East Carondelet community due to “high tension lines over the fire.”

It took about 30 different emergency services agencies more than six hours to clean up the area, authorities said.
