Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark documentary trailer reveals controversial history of Alvin Schwartz's horror books
What is scarier than Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books? Not much, if you were one of the censorious folks in the ’90s who were terrified at the effect Schwartz’s tales might have on the youth of America and attempted to get them banned from school libraries and classrooms.
Ahead of the Guillermo del Toro-produced big screen adaptation of the books (out Aug. 9) a new documentary called Scary Stories explores the controversial history of Schwartz’s spine-tingling tomes. Directed by Cody Meirick, the film features more than 40 interviews with everyone from relatives of the late Schwartz to fellow children’s book authors like R.L Stine and Q.L. Pearce.
Following a limited theatrical release, Scary Stories will be available on VOD from May 7 with a DVD release set for July 16.
