Avengers: Endgame to Keep Some Movie Theaters Open Around-the-Clock on Opening Weekend

Avengers: Endgame will make history on its opening weekend in more ways than one.

The highly-anticipated Marvel epic — which is expected to massively break box office records — is set to officially hit theaters Friday, with screenings starting in some theaters as early as Thursday evening. And AMC announced that select theaters around the country will stay open all weekend around-the-clock.

“With a desire to satisfy as many Marvel fans as possible on Thursday and through the weekend, AMC’s programming team is reviewing ticket sales theater by theater and adding showtimes later and later,” Elizabeth Frank, AMC executive vice president of worldwide programming, said in a statement. “In fact, there are multiple AMC locations that will be operating around-the-clock from Thursday night through Sunday.”

17 theaters across the country will be open from Thursday to Sunday, while 29 will be open for 48 hours Thursday and Friday. 18 more theaters will alternate between being open Thursday through Saturday or Friday through Sunday.

The movie picks up after last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, in which bad guy Thanos (Josh Brolin) collected all the infinity stones and erased half the universe’s population.

Endgame will clock in at three hours and two minutes, making it the longest Marvel movie yet. In an interview with Vulture, the screenwriters of the film, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, insist the film is as “lean” in its runtime as possible.

“It’s exactly as long as it needs to be,” McFeely said. “Any shorter and it would have felt like we weren’t honoring all the threads and franchises that are feeding into this climax.”

The two also faced the challenge of culminating 11 years worth of movies, beginning with the release of Iron Man in 2008.

“Twenty-two movies in, not only has the movie earned its length, but people deserve a movie of that substance,” McFeely continued. “I swear to God, it sounds like a paradox to say this, but it’s a lean three hours!”
