American Idol 's Ryan Seacrest Makes History by Handing Over His Hosting Duties ... Temporarily!
American Idol is making history!
For the first time in Idol history, longtime host Ryan Seacrest will be handing over his hosting duties … but, don’t worry, only for one night!
In an exclusive clip of Monday’s episode (which was taped a few weeks ago), in-house mentor Bobby Bones revealed that he would be taking over for Seacrest — who had fallen ill.
“I am not Ryan Seacrest,” Bones, 39, said. “I am Bobby Bones. “Sadly, Ryan is sick and I look most like him so they asked me to fill his shoes tonight. Ryan, love you, buddy, hope you get better.”
“It’s round two of our All-Star duet round and, man, do we have a lineup for you tonight,” he continued. “We are joined by six singing superstars who will be teaming up with our super talented contestants for some show-stopping duets.”
During an appearance on Seacrest’s morning radio show, On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Bones, who celebrated his birthday on April 2, opened up about the gift he received from the longtime Idol host — a pair of shoes with a note that said, ‘Thanks for filling my shoes.'”
“Bobby was kind enough to fill in for Monday’s episode which we taped a few weeks ago, and I’m thinking, you know, the guy stepped in last-minute, did a great job. What do I get him?” Seacrest said. “I got him some shoes!”

In Sunday and Monday’s episodes, all-star musicians including Ben Harper, Julia Michaels, Shaggy, Lukas Graham, Chris Isaak, Cynthia Erivo, Brett Young, Jason Mraz, Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, Elle King and Lovely the Band will join forces with the remaining contestants to perform powerful duets.
From there, judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie will determine which finalists will advance to the Top 14 and get the chance to perform for America’s vote.
American Idol airs Sundays at 8 p.m. EST, with five additional Monday night episodes airing now.
