Elvis Presley is set to join ABBA in the strange new world of immersive concerts more than 45 years after he passed away.

The Return to Sender and Hound Dog superstar, who had an Oscar-nominated movie made about him last year, will be brought to life in London in November before moving to Las Vegas, Berlin and Tokyo.

British immersive entertainment outfit Layered Reality, which has previously made immersive experiences on the Gunpowder Plot and The War of The Worlds, has secured the global rights for the Elvis Evolution show.

Taking place in a yet-to-be-named Central London location, the show will feature a life-sized digital Elvis and make use of AI, holographic projection, augmented reality, live theatre and multi-sensory effects, Layered Reality said. CEO Andrew McGuinness told the BBC it would be “a next-generation tribute to the musical legend” and allow people to “step into the world of Elvis and walk in his shoes”. Elvis Evolution will also feature an Elvis-themed bar with restaurant and live music.

The move follows the runaway success of ABBA Voyage, which launched 18 months ago near the Stratford Olympic Park and has taken the English capital by storm. The Elvis show differs in that the subject has been dead for decades, whereas all four members of ABBA had a hand in the production of their show, alongside Swedish entertainment company Pophouse and VFX outfit Industrial Light & Magic. Holograms of the likes of Tupac and Michael Jackson have been used in the past, although never for a full show. Meanwhile, the Beatles’ final song was recently completed using AI.

Elvis’ place in popular culture has been to the fore over the past 12 months or so, with an Austin Butler-starring Baz Luhrmann movie about him receiving eight Oscar nominations and another, about wife Priscilla, launching this week. A stage adaptation of Elvis, with Luhrmann attached as producer, is in development.
