Elton John Has Not Seen 'Bohemian Rhapsody' And Refuses To Watch It

'Bohemian Rhapsody' Was A Massive Hit

Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the biggest hits of 2018, proving that people will never get tired of Queen and Freddie Mercury. Between a nearly billion dollar worldwide box office take and a slew of awards recognition, Bohemian Rhapsody was a surprise phenomenon despite the controversy around the film.

Elton John Is On The Promotional Trail

One man who knew Mercury very well is Elton John, who is currently in the cultural conversation even more than usual. Between the awards push for his magical musical biopic Rocketman and his new autobiography Me, John is opening about about his life in a way that he hasn't for many years.

He Has Not Seen 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

During an interview with GQ UK, John explained that while he supports the film, he refuses to watch Bohemian Rhapsody.

"I couldn't see it. I couldn't watch it because I'm so close to Freddie. I've seen snippets of it and I thought that Rami Malek was fantastic, but being Freddie's dearest friend, I couldn't watch it."

Opening Up About His Friendship With Freddie

John and Mercury were very close friends, especially in the 1980s, and it was Mercury, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan who encouraged John to get sober when his addictions became too severe. After the confrontation, John went on one last brutal cocaine binge before realizing that he really was out of control and entered rehab.

John, now 29 years sober, looks back on his friendship with Freddie fondly, so it makes sense that seeing his story told on the big screen could be a bit overwhelming.
