Elton John celebrates 'first time' awards win with longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin at Golden Globes
Duos don’t get more iconic than Elton John and Bernie Taupin, but it took 52 years for the pair to finally bask in the glow of awards season adoration.
The longtime musical partners have won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song for their spirited tune “(I’m Gonna Love) Me Again,” which appears in Rocketman, director Dexter Fletcher’s 2019 musical biopic about John’s rise to fame as a recording artist.
“[Making Rocketman] was one of the most emotional moments of my life, and to win this, it’s my first time I’ve ever won an award with him! We never won a Grammy!” John said of the lyricist after the pair have worked steadily together since the late 1960s, having teamed for hit singles like “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and the Jets,” and “Your Song” over the years.
“This is really sweet because this is not just about a song we wrote for a movie, this is a song we wrote for a movie which deals with our relationship,” Taupin said. “It’s a relationship that doesn’t happen very much in this town. It’s a 52-year-old marriage, so, thank you!”
Following its world premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Rocketman went on to become a critical and commercial hit, grossing $96.4 million in North America and an additional $98.8 million from worldwide territories. Taron Egerton, who plays John in the film, also received major awards season accolades in the wake of the film’s success, bagging nominations from the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild for his leading performance.
Prior to their shared nomination for Rocketman, John and Taupin earned Golden Globe nominations for original tunes contributed to movies like 2011’s Gnomeo & Juliet and 2003’s Mona Lisa Smile, while Sunday’s victory marks John’s second overall Golden Globe win (he first scored a trophy for writing “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” for the 1994 animated film The Lion King). They were also honored with the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame’s Johnny Mercer Award in 2013.
