Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, a man seemingly determined to court negative press at every possible turn, lashed out via Twitter at a rescue diver who publicly criticized Musk’s efforts to join the rescue of the Thai youth soccer team trapped in a flooded cave network.

Vern Unsworth, a British-born diver living in Thailand who worked on the 18-day-long rescue mission, publicly dismissed Musk’s attempt to save the boys as having "no chance of working." Musk and his engineers built a miniature submarine in hopes that it could be used to ferry the kids to safety, but the idea was rejected by the rescue team as the submarine was unlikely to be able to navigate the cramped caves. Unsworth suggested that Musk "stick his submarine where it hurts." Musk struck back on Twitter, suggesting that Unsworth, a British national living in a country infamous for sex tourism, is a pedophile.

Faced with criticism for calling a heroic rescuer a child abuser, Musk has so far simply doubled down.

Musk’s Twitter tantrum comes shortly after it was revealed Saturday that the self-described socialist donated nearly $40,000 to a conservative political action committee focused on cementing the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. It makes very little sense that someone who purportedly considers climate change to one of the most pressing issues facing the world would donate money to a party that doesn’t believe it exists, but does anything that Elon Musk does really make much sense at this point?
