‘Pageboy’

Elliot Page's new memoir "Pageboy" explores his struggles with being trans in Hollywood.
Elliot Page's new memoir "Pageboy" explores his struggles with being trans in Hollywood.

By Elliot Page (Flatiron, nonfiction)

What it’s about: The Oscar-nominated star of “Juno” writes of his leap to stardom as he navigated his queerness and his discomfort playing the part of a Hollywood starlet in this intimate interrogation of sex, trauma and identity.

The buzz: “Trans people are facing increasing attacks, from physical violence to the banning of healthcare, and our humanity is regularly ‘debated’ in the media,” Page wrote announcing the book on Instagram in December. “The act of writing, reading, and sharing the multitude of our experiences is an important step in standing up to those who wish to silence and harm us. Books have helped me, saved me even, so I hope this can help someone feel less alone, feel seen, no matter who they are or what path they are on.”

‘George: A Magpie Memoir’

By Frieda Hughes (Avid Reader Press, nonfiction)

What it’s about: Poet and painter Hughes, the daughter of famed poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, shares the touching story of rescuing a baby magpie named George, whose nest was destroyed in a storm – and who may have rescued Hughes herself.

The buzz: Kirkus Reviews calls it “a poignantly heartwarming delight.”

‘All the Sinners Bleed’

By S. A. Cosby (Flatiron, fiction)

What it’s about: Former FBI agent returns to his Southern hometown and becomes the first Black sheriff in the county’s history. That’s hard enough, but it gets a whole lot harder when Titus discovers a serial killer targeting Black children and hiding in plain sight.

The buzz: A starred review from Publishers Weekly says this “superb thriller” is “easily the author’s strongest work to date.”

'Sparkella': Channing Tatum on the 'emotional, creative warfare’ of raising kids

‘Making It Home: Life Lessons From a Season of Little League’

By Teresa Strasser (Berkley, nonfiction)

What it’s about: Strasser’s moving memoir recounts her mother’s and brother’s deaths, just four months apart, and how shared grief – and Little League – brought her closer to her cantankerous father.

The buzz: “Readers need never have set foot on a baseball diamond to get this heartwarming message,” says a starred review from Publishers Weekly.

‘My Friend Anne Frank’

By Hannah Pick-Goslar (Little, Brown Spark, nonfiction)

What it’s about: The Holocaust survivor recounts the horrors faced under Nazi occupation and her childhood friendship with the girl next door, Anne Frank, whose sudden disappearance tormented Pick-Goslar for years.

The buzz: Kirkus Reviews calls it a “painful history but a good choice for readers interested in Anne Frank or Holocaust-era memoirs.”
