Ellie Kemper Remembers When Jon Hamm Was Her High School Drama Teacher: A 'Class Act'

Before they became costars on Netflilx's 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt', Hamm taught Kemper's acting class in high school

Ellie Kemper is reflecting on her high school years — and her connection to Jon Hamm!

The future Mad Men actor was the drama teacher at Kemper’s high school, and she said he even supported her early career endeavors while becoming a viral TV star.

"Jon Hamm is a generous, selfless kind of guy," Kemper, 43, said on an episode of Andy Cohen’s Andy Cohen Live on Sirius XM. "I reached out to him when I was doing my one-person show. A little comedy show. I had my little suitcase of props. I was doing this one-person show in Los Angeles, and at that time, he was already famous on Mad Men."

Kemper continued, "I emailed him from our high school directory. I said, 'Hey, I'm doing this show. I know you're really busy, but it'd be great if you could come.' And he came, and that's when I really reconnected with him."

Of the kindness Hamm, 52, displayed, the Office alum added: "I mean, that's a class act, right? He's a good guy."

Cohen then asked Kemper if she even had a crush on the actor, especially while she was in high school. "Here's the thing," Kemper began. "So, he's 10 years older than I am. He went to my high school. To give people some background, he went to my high school, went to college, came back and taught drama for a year at our high school. And he's the youngest teacher by far. He's not bad-looking, and he's teaching drama."

Cohen then butted in with a correction, saying, "Excuse me, he's great looking."

Kemper had to agree. "He is, in fact, great looking," she said, even using the word "dreamy."

Hamm has also spoken about his time teaching Kemper while jointly speaking with Entertainment Weekly in 2013. "You were in ninth grade, and this is a class that had everyone from ninth grade to seniors in it — so you were on the young end of the spectrum," Hamm told Kepmer at the time. "And yet, I remember you being very good."

Hamm and Kemper later got the chance to share the screen together. The Baby Driver star appeared on Kemper's hit Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, where he played Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne. "When they told us that he would be playing the reverend, it was fantastic. But I was a little scared," Kemper said during a 2015 appearance on a Television Critics Association panel.

"I think there's still a teacher-student dynamic, and acting with him was a little bit nerve-racking just because I felt like he was still grading me on some level," she added. "But he's a wonderful man and it was a lot of fun."
