Ellen, Tom Hanks, and Others Weigh In on Historic World Series

With a historic World Series just about to get underway, sports fans around the entertainment world are weighing in. Hosts of late-night and daytime shows alike can’t help but put in their two cents about this series, which will pit the Chicago Cubs, who haven’t won a championship since 1908, against the Cleveland Indians, who haven’t won a championship since 1948, three years after the Cubs’ last appearance in the World Series.

Stephen Colbert, host of the Late Show and longtime Cubs fan, began his show Monday night with a short segment claiming the Cubs are in the World Series because Manager Joe Madden signed a blood contract with an evil wizard in exchange for a championship. The Late Show also claimed that the evil wizard had the power to change into many forms, including Cubs General Manager Jed Hoyer.

Even if the Cubs did have an evil wizard on their side, the Cleveland Indians might have something even more powerful: the nicest guy on the planet, Tom Hanks. Hanks was a guest on The Late Show on Monday and let it be known that he was rooting for the Indians, despite apparently being in the minority.

“I’m gonna tell you right now. Yeah, Cubs great … I’m rooting for the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series,” Hanks said.

On Ellen, host Ellen DeGeneres claimed to have a way of predicting the outcome of the World Series that was 98 percent accurate. She had two shirtless “hunks,” one in a Cubs hat and one in an Indians hat, dance amid the largely female crowd, and whichever one collected the most money, she said, that team would win the championship.

The Today show sent reporters to both Chicago and Cleveland, and both were seen hanging out with fans in bars, despite the early time of day. In Cleveland, the reporter caught up with a 104-year-old Indians fan who wants to see just one more championship before she dies. And in Chicago, it came as no surprise that the fans were singing “Go Cubs, Go.”
