Ellen Pompeo gave followers a nostalgic rush when she posted an Instagram selfie with former Grey’s Anatomy co-star T.R. Knight.

The actress, who stars as Dr. Meredith Grey on ABC’s long-running medical drama, posted the photo on Friday, one day after a bombshell episode that detailed Dr. Alex Karev (played by Justin Chambers) ditching his wife Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington) to live with first wife Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and their 5-year-old twins. Stevens had conceived the children using frozen embryos after her character moved away in season six. Chambers’s departure left many long-time fans upset.

“Old friends are the BEST friends,” Pompeo, 50, wrote on Instagram. “@t.r.knight... but like we aren’t old... we’ve just known each other for a very long time yes yes that’s it....” Knight, 46, who played Dr. George O’Malley until 2009 when his character died in a bus accident, shared the selfie on his Instagram page, writing, “I’m just happy we met when we were fetuses.”

On Friday, the duo was also photographed leaving a restaurant together in Los Angeles. That day, Pompeo posted an Instagram video montage featuring scenes from the show, and thanked the “passionate loyal fans anyone could ever ask for.”

Pompeo clearly said that she was pleased with how Chambers was written off the show. “For me personally for Karev to go back to the beginning.... was the best possible storyline,” she wrote. “It pays homage to those incredible first years and the incredible cast...that created a foundation so strong that the show is still standing. So let’s not be sad....”
