Ellen Pompeo Catches Up with JAY-Z at Pre-Grammys Brunch in an Instantly Meme-able Meeting

Is JAY-Z a Grey’s Anatomy fan?

Fans of the hip-hop mogul and the long-running ABC drama were set abuzz after he and series star Ellen Pompeo were photographed on Saturday while chatting at Roc Nation’s annual pre-Grammys brunch.

In the photo, Pompeo (dressed in a dusty rose pantsuit) was in deep conversation with JAY-Z, who sipped a cocktail and was wearing a baby-blue suit with a patterned bandana.

Their meeting inspired many playful riffs when PopSugar posted about it on Instagram, writing, “Okay, we REALLY wanna know what Ellen Pompeo and Jay Z are talking about.”

One commenter mused that Pompeo said, “Hey J…..When would you like to come on Grey’s as a special guest?”

Pompeo’s appearance at the event may come as a surprise to some, but the actress is married to music producer Chris Ivery, who shares friends with JAY-Z.

The Grey’s Anatomy star wasn’t the only A-lister at the brunch — the star-studded guest list also included Beyoncé, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Meek Mill, Janelle Monáe, Miguel, Usher and Fifth Harmony alum Normani.

Pompeo previously revealed she is a big fan of JAY-Z. In a 2018 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pompeo said she hopes actors will follow his lead in how he makes business decisions.

“I don’t know if you listened to Jay Z’s latest album, but in one song he talks about how all the white guys own the record labels and they say to these artists, ‘Oh, here’s a $3 million advance,’ while they’re making billions,” Pompeo told THR. “The artists are chasing Grammys and Lamborghinis, so they think, ‘Oh yeah, I’m rich.’ Meanwhile, Sony just made f—ing $500 million, and they gave you $3 million and you think you’re doing amazing.”

Pompeo added: “With Tidal, Jay Z’s empowered artists by giving them a piece and it makes them more invested. I love it.

“Like the music business, we need to get to a place where actors have more ownership over what they do,” she continued. “That should be part of this conversation we’re having now.”

Ahead of the telecast, the Carters — aka JAY-Z and wife Beyoncé — won one of their three 2019 Grammy nominations: best urban contemporary album for Everything Is Love.

The 61st Annual Grammy Awards are broadcasting live from Staples Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS.
