Ellen Page: Being in the Closet Is Toxic

Ellen Page was on The Late Show and had a discussion with Stephen Colbert about being a champion for LGBT civil rights. Page, who came out during a speech to the Human Rights Campaign in 2014, said that a burden has been lifted ever since.

“I feel so grateful,” said Page about coming out. “You know, I feel so grateful to feel how I feel now, compared to how I felt when I was a closeted person. It’s not a nice place to be. I was sad. It is toxic. And I wish that no one had to live that way.”

Page’s comments are ones to consider in light of Matt Damon’s recent quotes to The Guardian in which he suggested actors shouldn’t talk about their personal lives. For Page, it enriched her life to reveal more. “As a person, I’m a very privileged person,” Page told Colbert. “I’m a very privileged gay person, and those who are affected the most in our community are the most vulnerable. And I feel very grateful to be able to talk about things or share stories and meet incredibly inspiring people.”

Page is set to receive the National Vanguard Award from the Human Rights Campaign at its annual dinner in October. Among those in attendance will be Vice President Joe Biden, who is delivering the keynote address. Biden has been a proponent of gay marriage, which was legal in Page’s native Canada by 2005.
