Ellen DeGeneres Endorses Amanda Gorman for President 1 Week After Inauguration Speech

Amanda Gorman has dreams of becoming president one day – and Ellen DeGeneres is already endorsing her for 2036!

The 22-year-old Harvard graduate became the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history when she recited her poem "The Hill We Climb" at President Joe Biden's inauguration on Jan. 20.

Gorman, who has been vocal about her presidential aspirations from a young age, received one of her first endorsements this week following a vote of confidence from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Inauguration Day.

During a virtual appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Tuesday, the talk show host told Gorman, "I want to be one of the first to give you my official endorsement."

DeGeneres, 63, then pulled out some presidential campaign merchandise for Gorman that included T-shirts, pins, and mugs.

"We're behind you 100 percent," DeGeneres said.

Gorman then revealed she's thought about being president since she was in sixth grade.

"I had a math teacher who said kind of somewhat jokingly — because I was a very passionate, feisty girl, as I am today — you should run for president," she recalled. "I was like, you know what? That tracks. Let's put that on the bulletin board for the future."

The Harvard graduate's family, she said, are also very supportive of her goals. "They know when I say something I mean business," she said.

"In college, my twin sister would be at like parties and people would be posting things on Snapchat or whatever. And she would say, 'Don't get a photo of me, my sister is running for president in 25 years from now. I can't have an image coming up,'" Gorman said of her twin Gabrielle, who is an activist and film writer.

Gorman added, "So we all really hold ourselves accountable to the dream."

Gorman admitted to DeGeneres that she still gets star-struck over former First Lady Michelle Obama, whom she has met "a few times before" and gave her the "biggest, warmest" hug at the inauguration ceremony.

"Whenever I meet Michelle, I hope that she forgets meeting me because I just want a do-over. I just want a clean slate and do it right this time," she told DeGeneres. "But she always remembers and she's always great."

Gorman added, "And when I hug her, I'm so short - my forehead is like in her belly button, and it's the best."
