Adoption, IVF, surrogacy — we all know there’s more than one way to build a family, and that they’re all equally valid. But still, judgment sometimes persists around those who can’t (or choose not to) conceive naturally, as Elizabeth Banks knows all too well. The Charlie’s Angels triple-threat used a surrogate to conceive sons Felix and Magnus and recently opened up about the judgment she’s received for her decision, despite the social progress we’ve made in regards to reproductive rights.

“Women’s reproductive issues were things you would whisper about in small circles,” Banks said in a new interview with Porter. Now, there’s ‘#ShoutYourAbortion and IVF Facebook groups.” She continued, “I definitely still think I’m judged for what I’ve done and that people don’t understand my choices, but I don’t feel I owe anybody an explanation. If my story helps people feel less alone on their journey, then I’m grateful for that.”

Fortunately, Banks doesn’t seem too bothered and seems intent on living her best life with husband Max Handelman, who she’s been with for an impressive 27 years.

It’s the thing I’m most proud of,” she says of her marriage, adding, “I do think people grow together or they grow apart. We definitely grew together…I think there are people who go into marriage thinking: ‘If this doesn’t work, I’ll get divorced.’ That’s not me. You’re going to have bad moments. You’re committed to something. Do you value it, or don’t you?”

Catch Banks in the Charlie’s Angels reboot alongside Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska, in theaters now.
