Eli Manning mentors young quarterback one day after being benched

The New York Giants benched Eli Manning on Tuesday, apparently ending the NFL’s second-longest streak of starts by a quarterback. It was a humiliating possible end to a sterling Giants career, but it has also allowed Manning to demonstrate the kind of player he is. Case in point: Manning began the first day as an ex-starter by mentoring the guy who might be a future starter:

While Geno Smith is apparently getting the start this weekend, Davis Webb appears to be the heir apparent for the Giants down the line. ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the Giants intend “to give rookie Davis Webb the bulk of the remaining starts at QB this year, possibly beginning with the Week 14 game against the Dallas Cowboys.” The idea of throwing Webb into the fire on the road against the Oakland Raiders didn’t sit well with the Giants, perhaps the only wise decision they’ve made in all of this mess.

Regardless, it appears Manning is taking the highest of high roads here, helping Webb navigate the thickets of quarterbacking in the NFL.
