A herd of Asian elephants migrating through China’s Yunnan Province moved southward through some woodland near Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture on July 12-13, prompting evacuations.
Local officials who are monitoring the elephants said 1,847 people were evacuated.
More than 200 emergency response and police personnel were deployed to ensure the elephants’ safety as they continued their journey.
The elephants have gained a lot of attention locally, and prompted a media campaign to name each individual in the group. Credit: Yunnan Headquarters for Safety of Asian Elephants via Storyful
