Elementary Boss Talks Renewal Odds, Teases Cliffhanger Ending for Season 5
Will Elementary‘s Season 5 finale find Sherlock Holmes and Joan Watson solving their last case?
CBS has yet to renew the long-running drama — it was one of the few series left off the network’s lengthy list of pickups in March — but executive Rob Doherty is betting on a sixth season.

“I’m an eternal optimist,” Doherty tells TVLine. “I feel good. I feel like we’ve had a strong season. We’re certainly very pleased with the way it’s wrapping up. And trust me, there’s a lot of Elementary left in this humble writing staff. Many, many stories to come.”
Doherty adds that the Season 5 closer (airing Sunday, May 21 at 10/9c) was “absolutely” intended as “a season finale,” not a series ender. And if it does turn out to be the show’s swan song, viewers might be left without closure, seeing as how the episode features “a cliffhanger in a couple of respects.”
In its oft-bumped Sunday timeslot, Elementary this season is averaging not quite 5 million total viewers — a smaller weekly audience than the terminal Pure Genius and Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders — along with a 0.7 demo rating, which bests only DOA Doubt and Saturday import Ransom. Its most recent outing (on April 16) did 4.3 mil and a 0.6, marking one of its smallest audiences ever while not quite hitting its all-time demo low.
Elementary fans, hit the comments to let us know if you want a Season 6. And stay tuned to TVLine for scoop on the show’s upcoming episodes!
